Manley Art Center is featuring the exquisite, segmented wood turned art of Mike Griffith and a collection of amazing acrylic paintings by Ashlee Harper. Both artists were interviewed by Pete Chasar at the June Art Walk.
Mike Griffith's background as a machinist helped to prepare him for this exacting art. Here he shares a happy anecdote with interviewer Pete Chasar.
Mike is holding two rings of segments that he glued together in preparation to create a bowl.
Mike explained that the segments used to create his vessels must be very precisely cut. Even a hair-width of difference in the segments will cause them to misalign in the finished piece. He was asked if he cuts the pieces by hand and said that a hand saw could never be precise enough. He uses a table saw made in 1947.
