Meet the marine debris artist during Art Walk on October 14, from 3 to 6 at the reception at Manley Art Center.
Ten years ago, artist Elizabeth Roberts volunteered for a marine debris cleanup expedition that would forever change her life. While picking up litter in the Gulf of Alaska, she became horrified by how much trash--80,000 pound of mostly non-biodegradable toxic plastics--was accumulating on this remote uninhabited island. She learned from research scientists, as she witnessed first-hand, how the long-term consequences of our reliance on plastic, and the chemicals they are made from, was absolutely destroying our marine ecosystem
What started as an exciting summer adventure developed into a committed crusade to use her skills as an artist to educate people about the devastating impacts of plastic pollution in our aquatic environments.
Ten years later, we know more about how microplastics make their way up the food chain on to our dinner plates, into the air we breathe and the water we drink. So Roberts is at it stronger than ever, as an artist and environmental activist, dedicated to spreading the word through her clever, inspirational artworks.
You can see her work in various places from New York to Norway. More locally her work is represented at the Port Orford Visitor Center and the Charleston Marine Life Center. Now, for the month of October, you can see an exhibit and meet the artist in Brookings, at the Manley Art Center, which is featuring Roberts as its monthly featured artist. Creative, fun, inspiring and informative, this exhibition is suitable for people of all ages and interests.
Roberts most recent artistic challenge is for the Elahka Alliance, a non-profit organization here in Oregon, working for the reintroduction of sea otters to the Oregon Coast. Sea otters were once abundant off our coast until the fur trade eventually wiped them out. Efforts are now being made to bring them back, and Roberts is doing her part by unveiling her sculpture October 13th in Lamglois during a fundraiser for the Elahka Alliance
Join us in viewing recent works by Elizabeth Roberts and celebrate the ways that we can make meaningful differences through our consumer choices. Elizabeth Roberts’ show will run for the entire month of October at the Manley Art Center, 433 Oak Street, Brookings Oregon. Reception with music and an artist interview will be held during the monthly Art Walk on Saturday, October 14, from 3 to 6 p.m.
