Manley Art Center announces the opening reception for the August Art Exhibit, held Saturday, August 12, 2023, from 3 to 6 PM at The Manley Art Center, located at 433 Oak Street in Brookings, Oregon.
The exhibit, on display from August 7th through September 2nd, features plein-air paintings by Jonathan Gaetke. Jonathan's process combines two of his greatest passions - an appreciation of nature and painting. This makes painting directly from nature his work environment, also called "plein air" painting.
Jonathan sees nature as offering an endless variety of subjects and challenges. What he chooses to paint comes from his emotional response to the subject and, if done well, hopefully, will be reflected to the viewer. This could be anything from a simple light effect to the complexity of a grand vista. His goal is to take a subject matter, deconstruct it, and put it back together in a visually clarified way. To achieve this goal, he continues to develop the skill set necessary to have command of the language of painting, i.e., drawing, value, color, and composition. Jonathan shares, “Painting is a profound, self-revealing process that allows me to explore myself and the world around me.”
The rest of the exhibit features a variety of art created by the Manley Art Center members. Proceeds from the sale of artwork are shared between the artists and the Manley Art Center. The Manley uses its portion to further its mission to promote, through education, the appreciation, distribution, and enjoyment of fine arts and crafts.
