Manley Art Center announces the opening reception for the April Art Exhibit, held Saturday, April 8th, 2023, from 3 to 6 PM.
The exhibit, on display from April 4th through 29th, features several of Jay Mosby’s recently recovered watercolor studies. Jay Mosby, an accomplished watercolorist, was an important part of the Brookings-Harbor art scene. He could often be found painting and drawing on Thursday afternoons at the Manley Art Center’s Life Drawing sessions. We are delighted to be able to display his work in this exhibit with music provided by John Marshall.
Following a career that included a stint at Disney Studios and thirty years as a designer for Glass Containers Corporation, Jay took up watercolor and was soon teaching. He taught watercolor painting in Los Angeles and Yosemite National Park before coming to Oregon. Jay joined PBAA in 1987 and became a member of the Life Drawing group. Jay and Buzz Stewart became fast friends and sketching buddies. For many years Jay and Buzz teamed up to offer free quick portraits during Art Walk and at PBAA’s annual events including Azalea Festival Art Show (AFAS) and Art in the Park.
“My art experience began at the Chouinard Art Institute where I studied with very capable artists who encouraged me to feel the essence, the depth, and charisma of my art. I was to become aware that my work would not need to look like something but it must feel like something.” - Jay Mosby
The rest of the exhibit features a variety of art created by the Manley Art Center members. Proceeds from the sale of artwork are shared between the artists and the Manley Art Center. The Manley uses its portion to further its mission to promote, through education, the appreciation, distribution, and enjoyment of fine arts and crafts.
