Children's Art Program Art Statement:
The PBAA Children's Art Program (CAP) is designed to teach art techniques and vocabulary to elementary school-age children. The program focuses on the seven art elements; line, shape, form, space, texture, value and color. Instructors also incorporate art history, materials and techniques to ensure a solid foundation in art education. Students are encouraged to view and discuss art displayed in the gallery and art history images, to help expand their ability to articulate their thoughts and ideas when viewing and making art. Each lesson strives to bring their newly acquired knowledge to culminate in a complete piece of artwork.

Maryjane Carlson using a slab roller at Manley Art Center. This new piece of equipment is a long term investment for the pottery group and will be moved out of the classroom as soon as the old "garage" space at Manley Art Center is transformed into a workspace for ceramics... hopefully in January. The roller is used to roll a piece of clay into flat slabs for building clay pieces. Maryjane still teaches students to roll slabs of clay with rolling pins and sticks and says that getting a perfect slab is one of the tougher things they have to learn, but the roller makes it easier for less physically strong people to roll out a perfect slab of clay every time and in less time. It has already been used for bowls, planters, boxes, tiles and many of the pieces of the totems the group has been making.
