opening reception for the

August Art Exhibit by TOM MOODY

The exhibit, on display from August 1st through September 3rd, features the eclectic art of Tom Moody. Tom’s love for art began in junior high when he became interested in hotrods and motorcycles. He spent a lot of time imagining and drawing his ideal hotrod or motorcycle. However that love often got him into trouble, or as Tom explains, "I was the one the teacher would rudely interrupt when caught sketching beneath my history or English books during class."

While Tom did not participate in art classes during his junior and high school years, he did participate in a drafting class and, after a stint in the Marine Corps, received an associate degree in industrial design from Southwestern Community College, San Diego, California. After receiving his degree, Tom began work as an engineering technician for the Naval Weapons Station in Fallbrook, California. During this period, he continued to draw and sketch in his free time and studied with well-known wildlife watercolor artist Joe Garcia in Southern California. Though Tom occasionally uses watercolors, carving, colored pencil, pen and ink, or alcohol ink in his work, his primary medium today is acrylics. Most important, he often uses those acrylics to create paintings with surprising surreal imagery.

The rest of the exhibit will be filled out with a variety of art created by Pelican Arts Association members.
Proceeds from the sale of artwork are shared between the artists and Manley Art Center. Manley Art Center uses its portion to further its mission to promote, through education, the appreciation, distribution, and enjoyment of fine arts and crafts.

Intro Pottery Class at Manley Art Center starts July 27

Starting July 27th

This is an in-depth pottery class exploring clay and hand-building techniques. We will cover pinch pots, slab building, coil pottery, building over both open and closed forms, and glazing. Students will learn different decorating techniques and about multiple firing options.

The class is designed for someone who has no clay experience or needs a refresher course. It should give the student the skills and knowledge to be comfortable joining our open studio pottery group (the Mudslingers).

Classes run for 10 weeks. Students are expected to be members of the PBAA. The class size is limited to 12 students.

Class Fee: $120 + $15 firing fee.

Materials Cost*: Clay is available for $46 for a 25 lb bag (July 2022 price), which includes the use of Mudslinger glazes. One bag is generally enough for the 10-week class.

Treasures of Hawaii - 6 pm today at the Chetco Community Public Library

The Friends of the Chetco Community Library in Brookings is sponsoring a presentation on July 20, at 6 p.m., by Dr. Adam Jansen, state archivist of Hawaii. The subject will be the mission of state archives and the unique treasures of the Hawaii State Archives.

Nestled between the Iolani Palace (the only royal palace in the Americas) and the Hawaii State Capitol is the treasure that is the Public Archives of Hawaii. The original building is purported to be the first fire-proof territorial archives building and was established more than a decade before the National Archives of the U.S. 

Having been ruled by Kings and Queens from Kamehameha I (who united most of the Hawaiian Islands in 1795) to Lili’uokalani (who was overthrown in 1893), Hawaii is unique in the United States. Hence, it has many unique treasures that are preserved for historical and cultural posterity. 
 

For instance, it has a treaty with Kamehameha’s X as a signature, as well as, moon rocks and a customs form signed by the Apollo XI astronauts on their return to Earth (filled out since they were “out of the country.”) 
 

The community is invited to join in the Forest Room (the large meeting room) of the library to learn more about state archives and about Hawaii.

DNACA's Juried Show is early this year!

We wanted to let you know that we are holding our 31st Annual Multimedia Juried Art Exhibit a bit earlier this year. We wanted to get away from the rain and dark afternoons of November, so we will be holding the event on August 18th this year! 

Intake will take place at the DN Courthouse, from 4-5pm, on Thursday August 18th. You may enter up to two (2) pieces, which must be able to hang on the wall, and each item entered is $10 payable by cash or check at the time of the intake. Any artwork juried into the show will remain on display at the courthouse through Jan 12, 2023!

Brookings Second Saturday Art Walk, After-Art Walk Report

Ambiance owner Debbie Harwood puts the finishing touches on her outdoor holiday decor.

Debbie welcomes everyone to come visit Ambiance by the Sea, 530 Hemlock Street, during the Art Walk or from 11 to 5 Wednesday through Saturday every week. The gift shop is packed with an eclectic mix of locally hand crafted nautical home decor, gifts and souvenirs.

During Art Walk Ambiance by the Sea offers a generous table of finger foods and desserts. Remy, visiting from Australia, especially enjoyed the cheesecake.

Five ink drawings and watercolors by Dana Nelson are featured at Ambiance by the Sea this month.

Heading the lineup of stars at Kim's Garden Party, featured artist Billie Ruth Furuichi read from one of her books.

Willow Owings and Chris Vorster, aka Homemade Jam, performed at Kim's Garden Party during Art Walk.

The ever-popular Lon Goddard was also onstage at Kim's Garden Party during the Art Walk.
Kim's is located at 301 Oak Street and features garden party art and repurposed items.

Dorothy Marshall is Artist of the Month at Brian Scott Gallery. She was introduced and interviewed by Artist Christina Olsen (right in photo).

Dorothy is showing decorative items with wood and glass beads and wire wrapped stones. Necklaces in the same style will be available soon.

She is showing a mix of wire wrap jewelry, art quilts, embroidery, metal work and stained glass.

A display of jewelry created by Dorothy Marshall is passed around for spectators to get a closer look at Brian Scott Gallery.

The panorama is nearly finished...Semi Aquatic Gallery owner Spencer Reynolds adds sunset lighting highlights to trees in a painting of Whaleshead Beach.

In addition to originals, prints, cards and clothing featuring Spencer Reynolds colorful Pacific Ocean art, Semi Aquatic Gallery at 654 Chetco Avenue also features a curated collection of hand-crafted and locally made gifts and home goods.

Kristen O'Neill is the Featured Artist at Manley Art Center this month. Kristen vicariously hiked the Oregon Coast Trail by painting the photographs that Pete Miller sent to her daily as he hiked the trail in 2016. You can view a portion of this collection at Manley Art Center during the month of July. The gallery at 433 Oak Street in Brookings is open from Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm.

Pete Chasar interviewed Kristen during the July Art Walk. She talked about her lifetime experiences in art and her time painting the Oregon Coast Trail series. 


A trio provides musical entertainment on the new deck at Manley Art Center.

Joan Eddy, a member of the Pelican Bay Arts Association’s Mudslingers pottery group adds glazing to her work at Manley Art Center. Several members of the Mudslingers group were at work in the classroom during the July Art Walk.
