Final Artistic License of the Season at Brian Scott Gallery

Angela Ewing hosted the final Artistic License of the Season at Brian Scott Gallery on September 27.

Dan Dodson displayed and talked about his "Sculptures from Driftwood". They are not drawn out in advance, but spontaneously created from found pieces.
Linda Stimson discussed the Wednesday and Saturday Farmers Markets that she organizes. The markets include artisans from around Oregon as well as local produce.

True Tilley, Goldsmith and jewelry designer discussed his jewelry creations and passed around photos of his work.

Angela Ewing, writer and storyteller, read one of her humorous short stories.
Complementary wine and snacks were enjoyed by the crowd as well as the four entertaining presentations.

Betty LaDuke Retrospective: Celebrating Cultural Diversity at Coos Art Museum

Betty LaDuke Retrospective: Celebrating Cultural Diversity, an exhibition of paintings and etchings by Betty LaDuke, will be on display at Coos Art Museum from October 11 through December 7, 2019. A free public opening for the exhibition will take place Friday October 11 from 5 to 7 pm. On Saturday October 12 at 2:00pm LaDuke will present an illustrated talk about her art and life, From Oregon to Timbuktu, Celebrating Cultural Diversity. The talk is free and open to the public.

In her over 65 year artistic career Ashland, Oregon artist Betty LaDuke has created a body of work rich in personal engagement with the diversity of world culture. LaDuke’s art focuses on the interconnectedness of all people through feminist, spiritual, and family themes. This retrospective traces her career through 54 works in both acrylic and etching including 9 major works from Coos Art Museum’s own Permanent Collection. The exhibition and accompanying illustrated catalog were funded by a generous grant from The Ford Family Foundation of Roseburg, Oregon.

The exhibition curated by Dana Rieck, Preparator Coos Art Museum, is accompanied by an illustrated catalog with essays by Jonathan Bucci, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Hallie Ford Museum of Art and Steven Broocks, Executive Director, Coos Art Museum. The exhibition and catalog were funded by a generous grant from The Ford Family Foundation of Roseburg, Oregon.

David Carmack Lewis at Coos Art Museum

Narratives and Metaphors, an exhibition of paintings by David Carmack Lewis, will be on display at Coos Art Museum. Carmack is exhibiting in the Richter Atrium Gallery at the Museum October 11 through December 7, 2019. A free public opening for Narratives and Metaphors will take place Friday October 11 from 5 to 7 pm.

David Carmack Lewis, a Portland based artist, has been a frequent participant in Coos Art Museum Expressions West exhibitions winning first place awards in both 2018 and 2011. He has had several one person exhibitions in Oregon including The Arts Center in Corvallis, Rogue Community College in Grants Pass and Lane Community College in Eugene.  To help produce this exhibition, Lewis received a Professional Development Award from the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

Describing his work Lewis says, “It is through narrative and metaphor, the oldest tools of art, that we create and comprehend the new and find new meaning in the familiar. My work explores imagery of the Pacific Northwest ….Dramatic lighting is just one of the tools I use to this end. And the light source, more often than not, is fire. Some of the work presented here was originally part of a large visual essay called “A God in the Hearth” about humanity’s deep connection to fire and the implications of fossil fuels.”

Coos Art Museum's Annual Fundraiser for 2020

Coos Art Museum will host its Fall Fling for the Arts Fundraising Dinner to be catered by Black Market Gourmet on Saturday, October 5, 2019. The event begins at 5 pm and will include both live and silent auction sales, and a no-host bar.

Chef Jardin Kazaar will be providing a scrumptious meal for your enjoyment. The menu items include: Creole Chicken (non-spicy preparation), Wild Rice Bistro Blend, Seasonal Vegetable, Pear/Cranberry Slaw with Napa Cabbage and Apple Cake

The highlight of the night’s festivities takes place on the Museum’s main floor in the Maggie Karl Gallery where a live auction will take place.  Original artworks by many of the South Oregon Coast’s finest artists will be on sale. This year we will also have several unique “experience packages” for bid. These “experiences” include music (Oregon Coast Music Festival), live theatre (Ashland Shakespeare Festival and others), dinning (Coach House and others), classes and a week-long vacation getaway.   The Fall Fling Fundraiser is a great way to become acquainted with the Coos Art Museum and to help support its worthwhile programs.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 6 from 5- 8 pm.  Coos Art Museum announces its 2019 Fall Fling for the Arts Fundraiser. All art lovers and museum supporters are cordially invited to attend this annual autumn fundraiser at the Museum.  The evening will be a grand experience, blending delightful socializing, scrumptious gourmet eating, and wonderful art.  Black Market Gourmet will cater the event and a no host wine service will be offered.

Free Admission at Coos Art Museum during the Steve Prefontaine Memorial Run

Through the generosity of the Prefontaine Memorial Run Committee admission will be free at Coos Art Museum during the Memorial Run events on Friday, September 20, Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22. Steve Prefontaine is remembered and honored in his home town of Coos Bay through a variety of ways including the Prefontaine Memorial Run.  At Coos Art Museum, the Prefontaine Memorial Gallery houses a large collection of Steve Prefontaine’s awards and memorabilia, as well as numerous photographs highlighting his illustrious running career.

In order to make this gallery display available to all of the runners and Pre’s fans, the Prefontaine Memorial Run Committee has arranged to make Museum admission free prior to and during the race. To accommodate the public during the Bay Area Fun Festival, the Museum will have special extended hours on Saturday September 21, from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm and on Sunday September 22, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. In addition to the Prefontaine Gallery, Museum visitors can view: The 26^th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition; Featured Maritime Artist – Calvin Liang, Let it Be: Randomness in Abstract Art – Rebecca Arthur and Geralyn Inokuchi, and Adopt-an-Artwork.

People's Choice Winner - 26th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition at Coos Art Museum

The votes have been counted and Captain Greg Freedman of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada will receive Coos Art Museum’s 26^th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition “People’s Choice Award” for his oil, Call of the Wild.

Joseph Gregory Freedman had his first one-man art show at Vancouver's Galerie Allen in 1972.  At about the same time he also started working for Seaspan, a Vancouver tugboat company. For thirty years the waterfront and the easel divided his attention then, in 2001, he retired from commuter ferries as a captain and took-up painting as a full-time career. Today his painting studio overlooks the Fraser River where the passing tugboats remind him of the career that influences many of those paintings. "Working on the ferry boats and the tugs was often monotonous," says Freedman, "but I kept myself interested by searching for things to paint in the industrial environment I spent so much of my time in and the juxtapositions that add flavor to daily tasks. Finding those things was my challenge while working on the boats - recreating them on canvas is my challenge today." A frequent participant in Coos Art Museum’s Annual Maritime Art Exhibition he received the Port Award in 2010.

The 26^th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition continues at Coos Art Museum until September 28.
