BROOKINGS, OREGON – 25 Years of Colors in Motion will be celebrated on the southern Oregon coast at the kite field at the Port of Brookings Harbor the weekend of July 15th and 16th. More than thirty nationally and world renowned kite fliers will be on hand to showcase their creative designs and colors at the 25th Annual Southern Oregon Kite Festival which is free and fun for all ages. This two-day “one of a kind” event is one of the most unique kite festivals in the country as it is non-competitive and the invited fliers showcase their individual talents in their routines choreographed to music. Popular announcer, Arnold Stellema, introduces the kite fliers as they perform and keeps the crowd informed about the different types of kites. Attendees may set up their chairs or blankets along the perimeter of the field to view the high-flying kites. Kite fliers are often seen walking along the side of the kite field showing their kites up close to the attendees.
Children will have the opportunity to build their own kites at the free Kids’ Kite Making Workshop held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on both days of the festival. Vendors will be on hand selling food, treats, and merchandise for the enjoyment of the attendees.
Spectators are encouraged to take advantage of the free parking in front of Boardwalk Village at the Port and take one of the three free shuttles to the kite field as parking is limited next to the kite field.
The Fourth Annual Indoor Kite Flying Demonstration will be held on Friday evening, July 14th, at 7 p.m., in the Brookings-Harbor High School gymnasium. Kite fliers experienced in indoor flying will entertain the attendees with their talent and without any available wind.
The popular kite auction banquet on Saturday evening is an opportunity to bid on collectible kites donated by the kite fliers and merchandise contributed by local merchants. Proceeds from the auction help to defray the costs of the following year’s festival.
On Sunday morning, the Harbor Fire Volunteers sponsor a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon at the Harbor Fire Hall on West Benham Lane.
