2017 Azalea Festival Art Show Snapshots

Audi Stanton did a demonstration with audience participation during the Art Show. Audi arranged for all the demos that were held during the show.

Arline Saul offered show goers a free art work of their name painted in calligraphy.

Sherryl Griffin and friends demonstrated how to work with kelp.

Buzz Stewart and Jay Mosby were busy on Saturday painting free portraits for show goers.

On Sunday they were back at work.

Dale Wells demonstrated the use of markers.

Sara Broderick painted a seal with pastels. She began with a blank canvas at 11 am and was finished by 1 pm.

Sara photographed the stages of her painting to use for future teaching purposes.

This acrylic painting by Ann Ostrowski was sold during the show.

Kathy Huxley did an oil painting demonstration on Sunday.

Maryjane Carlson demonstrated clay art techniques.

Drink n'Draw! at Vista Pub on Tuesday, May 23

Dear artists of Brookings and beyond,

You are invited to Drink n’ Draw! at The Vista Pub. Come to The Vista Pub on Tuesday, May 23rd from 5:30 to 7:30pm to draw, socialize and enjoy some of the finest craft brews and pub grub available on the Wild Rivers Coast.

Free drawing supplies will be provided for the event. The Vista Pub is located at 1009 Chetco Avenue, across from Subway in Brookings.

Brookings Second Saturday Art Walk in May

Pastel artist Les Cornish was interviewed by Pete Chasar at Manley Art Center.

Les Cornish was originally from South Africa and some of his paintings done in South Africa could be mistaken for paintings of the Oregon Coast. No wonder he chose to live in Brookings.

Les explained that pastel is pure pigment and pastel paintings are not drawings, even though they are often made with "sticks" of pastel - they are paintings made with pure pigment. The same pigment can be mixed with water to paint watercolors or oil to make oil paintings.

The May Gallery Theme at Manley Art Center is "Negative Space" and this wall of paintings shows the various ways negative space can be used in a painting.

The Chetco Community Library featured the Chetco Pelican Players performing a preview of "Chicago".

Pianist Christy Dolan performs in "Chicago" which will open at the Chetco Playhouse on June 2. More information about "Chicago".

GW Scott Woodward is a chef who paints late at night because painting helps him sleep well.

GW Scott Woodward was interviewed by Paula Edwards at Brian Scott Gallery during the May Art Walk.

In addition to 2 dimensional abstract paintings, GW likes to paint objects. What better objects for a chef to paint than spoons and knives?

For Artists who paint ships.. The Tall Ships are in Crescent City May 10 to May 15

The Crescent City Chamber of Commerce has announced:

The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will visit Crescent City Harbor May 10-May 15.  They offer dockside tours, adventure sails and battle sails.  The ships will tie up at Citizens Dock.  Lady Washington is the official ship of Washington State.  Hawaiian Chieftain is an interpretation of a typical coastal trader from the early 19th century.

Walk-on tours are self-guided visits of the ships hosted by crew in period costume.  Visitors are welcome to chat with the crews to learn about the ships’ voyages and programs.  A $3 donation per person is appreciated. Advance reservations are not required.

Both vessels are certified by the U.S. Coast Guard as passenger-carrying vessels and crewed by professional sailors and trained volunteers.  Built in 1989, the wooden-hulled Lady Washington is 112 feet long and her main mast rises 89 feet from the water.  She appeared in the 2003 movie Pirates of the Caribbean:  The Curse of the Black Pearl.  The 103-foot, nine-inch Hawaiian Chieftain is built of steel, and it was launched in 1988.  Her main mast rises 75 feet from the water.
