April Artistic License at Brian Scott Gallery

Paula Edwards led "Happy Birthday" to MC Angela Ewing at the April "Artistic License" at Brian Scott Gallery.

Dan Gray talked about how he creates his segmented wood sculptures.

Mike Dwaileebe showed some of his oil paintings and talked about his work on murals and trompe l'oeil wall treatments.

Terri Hagstsrom's poem on "Living with Modern Technology" was an ode to charms of the past.

Leslie Wolf discussed the collection of doll costumes she has designed and created.

Costumes were created using fabrics that Leslie has collected over the years.

The outfits include jewelry, shoes, hats, handbags, luggage and any other accessories that Leslie is inspired to create.

The gallery was filled to capacity for April's Artistic License, with people standing in the back and at the staircase.

Angela Ewing blew out the candles on her birthday cakes and guests enjoyed dessert.

The April Art Walk in Brookings Offered 2 New Venues - Photos by Nola Range and Ann Ostrowski

Wright's was bustling with activity. Ann Ostrowski was looking at Melody Wells' jewelry display that includes very sophisticated and beautiful pieces made by Joy Wells using magnets. Georgia and Bruce Cockerham talked with Dale Wells and Audi Stanton.

Jay Mosby was working on a portrait of Dennis Wright.

Jay also got a little hug of appreciation from Audi Stanton.

In Wright's classroom Kim Meyer did a fabric painting demo.

Adam Taylor entertained at Wright's during the April Art Walk.

Tom Sheets is April's Featured Artist at Wright's. His abstract acrylic-on-canvas work is on display in in the front gallery.

Spencer Reynolds at a NEW Art Walk Venue - Semi Aquatic Gallery at 654 Chetco Avenue. Spencer was laying out a new oil painting on wood, using photos of local seascapes as a reference.

Hither Thither & Yon at Semi Aquatic Gallery.

Dewey's Digs featured a collection of Theatrical Posters (thanks to Lon Goddard) and a collection of programs from Cheteco Pelican Player's Productions (thanks to Bill Schlichting), and presented two sketches from local theatrical productions.

Cast members from Brookings Harbor Community Theater's coming June production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" performed a sketch from the play.

Chetco Pelican Players cast of "Five Women Wearing the Same Dress" performed a scene at Dewey's Digs. This hilarious show is intended for mature audiences. Weekend shows (Fri - Sun) are on April 8, 9 & 10, April 15, 16 & 17 and April 22, 23 & 24. Tickets are available at Wright's, New Wave Video and at the door.

Victoria Tierney will teach you how to take those favorite old shirts and give them new lives.

You bring the shirts and she will provide the fabric pens and instructions. Silk and cotton seem to work particularly well but blends and polyesters will work too.

Expressions West 2016 Exhibition at Coos Art Museum

Coos Bay – From, April 22 to June 25, 2016 Coos Art Museum will be exhibiting the Expressions West 2016 juried painting competition. Artists from thirteen western states were invited to compete in this annual event. Juror Leslie Kenneth Price selected sixty-one paintings by fifty-five artists residing in California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.

The opening reception for Expressions West 2016 will take place on April 22 from 5 to 7 pm. The public is invited to attend. We anticipate that many of the participating artists will also be in attendance. An awards ceremony begins at 6 PM and Mr. Price will present the prize awards for the competition. The three prizes are $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place and $250 for the third place award. Honorable mentions will also be announced during the ceremony. We welcome all to come meet the artists and juror at the opening reception.

Juror of Expressions West 2016, Leslie Kenneth Price is known for abstract and elegant paintings inspired by nature, Zen Buddhism and jazz music. A professor at Humboldt State University for 30 years, Price received his MFA from Mills College in Oakland and his BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Among his solo exhibitions are: Piante Gallery, Eureka, California; Kimpton Gallery, San Francisco, California; and Morris Graves Museum, Eureka, California. He has participated in group exhibitions at: Edward Hopper Art Center, Nyack, New York; Museum of African Diaspora, San Francisco, California; and DiCirico Museum, Volos, Greece.

Garden Conversation: Paintings by Leslie Kenneth Price at Coos Art Museum

Coos Bay, OR - Coos Art Museum presents Garden Conversation a solo show of acrylic paintings by Northern California artist Leslie Kenneth Price, April 22 through June 25, 2016. The opening reception is Friday April 22 from 5 to 7pm and coincides with the opening of Expressions West 2016 the Museum’s painting competition for artists from the western states and juried by Mr. Price.

A retired Humboldt State University painting professor, Leslie Kenneth Price uses acrylic paint on wood panels to create layers and transparent planes of color. Price’s work is deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism and by Jazz music. A practitioner of Zen meditation his work is informed by the impermanence of nature. Jazz is full of complex rhythms, melodies, and improvisation, one can find the visual equivalent in Price’s work.  He grew up listening to his father play saxophone in a Jazz band, and since early childhood has been influenced by music.  While painting, Price frequently makes artistic decisions in the moment rather than methodically planning each stroke of the brush. “My aim is to make a painting that is dynamic and meditative simultaneously, which is similar to my experience of the source material.”

After attending the High School of the Arts in Manhattan and later earning an art degree at The Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, Price moved to Oakland, California in 1971 to attend graduate school at Mills College. Then followed a thirty year teaching career at Humboldt State in Arcata, California. Among his solo exhibitions are: Piante Gallery, Eureka, California; Kimpton Gallery, San Francisco, California; and Morris Graves Museum, Eureka, California. He has participated in group exhibitions at: Edward Hopper Art Center, Nyack, New York; Museum of African Diaspora, San Francisco, California; and DiCirico Museum, Volos, Greece.

 Coos Art Museum has been a cultural focal point of Oregon’s scenic Southern Coast since 1966. It occupies the historic 1936 Art Deco US Federal Building in downtown Coos Bay. The Museum offers a wide range of arts activities including exhibitions, art classes and lectures. Hours are 10:00am to 4:00pm, Tuesday through Friday and 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Saturday. Museum admission: $5 general, $2 students, veterans and seniors, free to Museum members.
