Sara Broderick, Artist and Art Instructor at College of the Redwoods and SOCC, also holds weekly Drop In Workshops at Wright's Custom Framing in Brookings. On Thursday Sara gave a talk and demo on art demos. Demos are something Sara has untold experience with. Above Sara explains the process she used for the portrait demo she did during the Azalea Festival Art Show.
Sara used pastel on suede board for the final portrait.
Sara discussed some of the techniques she has been trying recently. This floral was inspired by the style of Birgit O'Connor, who may have been inspired by Georgia O'Keefe. This is a watercolor that Sara has varnished instead of framing with glass.
This floral was Sara's first experiment in painting with ink. She had the full size sheet of watercolor paper dry-mounted at Wright's.
Sara loves to try new materials, techniques, and methods. She assures us that watercolor is not more difficult than other media, it just takes more planning. Sara holds Drop In Workshops at Wright's every Friday. The subjects covered are ones that the participants request. Also, if you'd like to try a new medium, Sara has supplies that she shares with her classes. If you ask, she will bring supplies, such as pastels, acrylics, oils, etc, and give you the opportunity to try them before you invest in your own.
This coming Saturday Sara will participate as an artist on the Coastal Garden and Art Tour. This will be her fifth year to paint on the tour. She prepared the display above to demonstrate the different stages of the paintings she has done in the gardens the past four years. Can't wait to see what she will do this year.
Coastal Garden and Art Tour tickets are available at numerous locations in Brookings, including Manley Art Center. They will also be available at the Little Bear Patch Garden at Kalmiopsis School on Easy Street on the day of the tour - Saturday, August 11, beginning at 10 am. Tickets are $10 per person and include a map to 8 Brookings-Harbor area gardens. Nineteen artists will be working in the gardens and most will have art for sale.
