Dewey's Digs, the downstairs Curry Coastal Pilot conference room which can be accessed from Art Walk Alley, is the Art Walk venue for photographic art. The Pilot's Features Editor, Bill Schlichting, is the curator for this gallery and he posts the announcement of the month's show in the newsstand in the Alley outside of Dewey's Digs.
This month at Dewey's Digs VIolet Burton is showing her "Beach Hide-A-Ways" photography. Her unique frames are created by her husband, Len Burton who is also an accomplished artist who paints oils.
Violet passed out bookmarks featuring a poem that she wrote:
Come build with me
by the sea,
running around
so full of glee,
gathering driftwood
and whatever you may
to create a special
beach hide-a-way.
Inspiration you see
is the key
to build by the sea
for you and me.

Hither Thither and Yon performed international music at Dewey's Digs.
Manley Art Center is hosting the Watercolor Society of Oregon's Travelling Show during January. Twenty Award Winning paintings, plus the painting that won the People's Choice Award for WSO's 46th Annual Transparent Watercolor Exhibition are on display at Manley Art Center until January 27.
Well known Oregon Coast Artist and WSO member, Dale Wells, is curator for the WSO show at Manley. He discussed the show and answered questions during Art Walk.
At Manley, Brookings Artist Pete Chasar (right) introduced Brookings Artist Buzz Stewart (left), who doesn't actually need an introduction in Brookings, but Pete gave an interesting summary of Buzz's lifetime career in art.
Buzz shared art that he has created over the years, including this early watercolor of Lone Ranch Beach that includes rice paper collage, and brochures for the Azalea Festival going back to 1959.
Buzz talked about his career and answered questions, while Art Walk Participants passed around examples of art that Buzz has created - including mechanicals for newspapers and magazines that were created entirely "by hand" including the text. That was before computers. Buzz Stewart is a member of Pelican Bay Arts Association and a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon.
In 2010 Buzz was juried into WSO's 45th Annual Aqueous Media Exhibition (which Manley Art Center was proud to host). Buzz received the Award of Distinction for his entry which is shown here before it was framed.
Jurassic Country entertained at Manley during the Art Walk with classic country music.
Marshall Thompson performed vocals and guitar at Signatures Gallery. Artists currently showing at Signatures include Jan Kunz, Drew Struzan, Karon Walstad, Ken Auster, Duncan Regehr, Spencer Reynolds, and Sandy Bonney.
Artists Thomas Sheets and Christina Olsen at Brian Scott Gallery where you can see the work of artists Lorraine Filippone (shown in photo), plus Pete Chasar, Christina Olsen, Horst Wolf, Elio Camacho, Randall Tillery, Dale Wells, Donna Goss, Manual Lopez, Nancy Tuttle, Jewell Johnson, Jan Opiat, Dan Sawyer, and Kathleen Kresa.
At Brian Scott Gallery, Horst Wolf discussed the history of the Brookings Second Saturday Art Walk (which was founded by Horst Wolf and Dale Wells). He said it is unusual for an art walk to be successful in a town the size of Brookings. The first Brookings Art Walk was held in June 2004 and has been held continuously ever since. He asked the audience to vote on a list of their favorite types of events to attend during the Art Walk.
Juggling Joy entertained with multiple hoops at the Chetco Library.
She even kept a hoop going while she juggled light balls.
Carl Rovainen played while Joy juggled.
Four Gold Beach Artists are showing at the Chetco Community Library this month. Above are two recent pieces by Lorraine Filippone.
Juggling Joy tried to teach Gold Beach Artist Alexandra Eyer how to juggle.
Alexandra was more successful with the hoops.
J.M. Steele with two of her luminous oil paintings that can be seen at the library all month.
Tod Steele obviously enjoys painting as much as we enjoy his paintings!
Jeanne and Tod Steele. The cow and buffalo on the left are Jeanne's and the dancing bears on the right are Tod's.
Gro Lent enjoying Tod's whimsical paintings at the library during Art Walk.
What? This wasn't on the program! Alexandra Eyer, Pete Chasar, Leslie Wolf and Juggling Joy - doing an exuberant "Twist" in front of Alexandra's display at Chetco Community Library.
Sharon Guinn, another Gold Beach Artist, is January Artist of the Month at Wright's Custom Framing. Sharon's passion is to paint and experiment with all kinds of subjects and media. She frequently paints with "The Tuesday Painters" at Manley Art Center and generously give demonstrations and lessons about techniques she has developed. Sharon has won numerous awards for her work and exhibits in gallerys in Gold Beach, Brookings, and Bandon, Oregon. See Sharon's Website for more.
Sharon also plays guitar and is a popular vocalist on the coast. She joined John Marshall at Wright's during the January Art Walk.
For everyone who saw the photo in yesterday's Pilot of me working on the website with a little Jack-Rat (Jack Russell/Rat Terrier) sitting on my lap - yes, Maxine is sleeping, curled up on my lap right now. The post is finished - time to wake up! -- Nola
P.S. Thanks to Lorna Rodriguez and The Curry Coastal Pilot for a really nice article.
