Films are our means of communicating values and identity. But writing movies that engage viewers with depth and truth is not an easy task. Yet there are writing skills, or ‘tricks of the trade,’ that will ensure an audience feels entertained and taken on an astonishing ride. These writing skills are the ‘Tools of Screenwriting.’ Barbara Bauer’s Screenwriting Class, starting on Sunday, January 23, will introduce aspiring screenwriters to these tools.
Each student will find a story that matters to him/her, identify the basic premise of the story, and develop the characters. Students will then create the obstacles encountered by the 'hero' of the story and resolve the conflicts at the end of the film. Students will write an opening scene to their story using the established screenplay format.
In addition, Ms. Bauer will provide students with individual counseling on their story and an opportunity to pitch their story to film professionals.
The class consists of twelve full-day seminars, lasting from 10 AM to 5 PM, beginning on Sunday, January 16, in the Conference Room at 625 Chetco Avenue in Brookings. Classes will continue on Sundays and Thursdays until March 3 and will include periods for lunch breaks and individual writing.
Tuition for students who sign up for the class from now until the introductory meeting on January 4 will be $400; thereafter tuition will be $480.
Credits from this class can be used toward a Screenwriting Master Class, which will likely be held in Brookings one or two years down the line.
