Call to Artists - 2010 Gold Beach American's Wild Rivers Coast Wine, Art and Music Festival

The time is close for the 2010 America's Wild Rivers Coast Wine, Art and Music Festival !

This is the 23rd annual festival, and the chamber committee has been working hard to produce a bigger and better festival for everyone's enjoyment. This year the event will be on Saturday, May 15, from 11 AM until 8 PM, and Sunday, May 16, from 12:00 noon until 6:00 PM at the Event Center on the Beach in Gold Beach. The Festival will be featuring over 60 vendors, 20 wineries, a brew pub, delicious cuisine, live music, crafts, the "Under the Big Top" Flower Show, and ART.

I will be emailing the art prospectus out this coming week, but copies will also be available at the Gold Beach Chamber office (in the GoldRush Building) and at Gold Beach Books this next week. (or we can snail mail them to you!)

Memories of the Stephen Quiller Workshop April 12-16, 2010 in Brookings

Thirty-one participants completely filled the combined conference rooms of the Best Western Beachfront Inn in Brookings, Oregon, April 12-16, for the Stephen Quiller Color and Watermedia Workshop.

 Although the class was large, everyone had their own 8' table and Steve circulated to critique each student's work. 

Steve’s lessons, demos and words were presented in a way that struck a harmonious and, sometimes emotional chord, with this writer. He moved through some of the principles that most of us have heard before but presented them in a way that resonated a little differently with many of us. He covered value, intensity, neutrals, complementary colors, analogous colors, color triads, granulation, negative and positive space, shapes, pattern, etc., while moving through demos in watercolor, gouache and acrylic, alone and in combination. Following his demos and lessons, there was time for us to practice the concepts on our own.

Steve totally immerses himself into his painting. He tries to stay with the moment and listen to what the painting is telling him. The following are some of his quotes that I jotted down during his demos.
 
I’m just listening to the painting…When I’m putting in these marks, I’m listening to the marks next to them…OK, let’s see what happens…and see where that goes…We’ll just play…I’m going to lay this in and see what happens…Let’s just dive in and see where it goes…I see the stroke and see the color before I put it down…I’m looking for a staccato beat between the strokes…I’m always aware of the rhythm and beat – that’s critical to the way I work…I want it to have enough visual juiciness to make you want to stay and look at the painting…Ask what inspires you about this scene and stay with your inspiration when you paint it.

I've been reminded to slow down, get out of my studio more often, try to quiet that other ego-based voice that’s ranting in my head…and listen to what happens.

I recommend that you read his latest, very beautiful book, Watermedia Painting, which combines the technicality of painting with his spiritual notes. Listen, paint…and begin your journey.

Let's see -- Cerulean Blue over Cad Red light -- looks like a bruise to me. A beautiful cool neutral, complete with a highlight and a note of pure color to set it off. Steve was having so much fun he didn't notice that he had painted more than the paper.

Wine, Art, Music Lovers - It's Wine Wednesday at Brian Scott Gallery

 
It's WEDNESDAY!  This is what's going to happen at Brian Scott Gallery:

• 5 PM -  We start pouring wine (glasses at $3, $5, and $7; beers $3.50; sodas $2.00).

• 6 PM - Our trio "Giraffes on a Raft" starts playing. This is the LAST TIME you get to hear them before John Boyd (guitar/vocals) starts his ocean journey. He probably won't be back before the end of summer!

• Look at the works of Elio Camacho and his disciples, plus Duncan Regehr, Christina Olsen, Valerie Tucker, Dale Wells, Horst Wolf, and paintings and sculptures from the vast collection of Brian Scott.

•  Free peanuts and chips.

Local Artists in Expressions West juried art show in Coos Bay

Seven pieces by local artists are included in Expressions West, a juried art show in Coos Bay from Friday, April 23 through July 3, 2010. The exhibition and competition includes paintings from artists all over the western United States.

The local artists whose works are in the show are Tammy Delaney, Alexandra Eyer, Lorraine Filippone and Jeanne Steele of Gold Beach, and Pete Chasar of Brookings.

Their pieces were chosen when 323 entries were whittled down to just 71 to create this year's Expressions West, which offers a first-place cash prize of $1,000 and is held annually at the Coos Art Museum, Oregon's third-oldest art museum.

 Tammy Delaney's piece "Ravaged" is a 18-by-24-inch oil on canvas that shows an impressionistic close-up view of a group of tree stumps on a hillside.

 Alexandra Eyer's painting "Cat Nap", a 30-by-22-inch watercolor, is a lively, stylistic portrait of a lady napping on an antique sofa.

 In her 48-by-54-inch, oil and silver leaf on canvas painting, Lorraine Filippone creates an airy abstract image with the feeling of a floral.

JMSteele's painting, "Cows and Clouds", a 28-by-30-inch oil on canvas, depicts a pair of white-faced steers set against a backdrop of dramatically colored storm clouds.

 Chasar has three pieces in the show, each a 36-by-36-inch acrylic on canvas rendition of a beach on the southern Oregon coast. "Bolders and Sand" is shown here.

Judging the show this year is Kevin Kadar, an artist who divides his time between Western Europe and Oregon. He is known widely for his intimate landscape and figure painting.

Cash prizes for first, second and third, as well as honorable mention awards, will be presented by Kadar during the exhibit's opening, 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 23 at the Coos Art Museum.

The Expressions West show will remain on exhibit through July 3. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday.

The museum is located at 235 Anderson Avenue, just one and one-half blocks from Highway 101 in downtown Coos Bay.

Admission fee:
$5 general
$2 for seniors and students.

Kathy Huxley and Sharon Guinn at GoldRush Center

A “Creative Combo”  will combine their artistic expressions on Friday May 7th, 6 pm to 8 pm at the GoldRush Center in Gold Beach. Sharon Guinn from Gold Beach and Kathy Huxley from Brookings are exhibiting a medley of styles and medias.  Kathy and Sharon both enjoy portraiture but you will also see landscapes, whimsy, graphic, figurative, and architectural motifs; a variety of subjects in different medias.

Kathy and Sharon met in a painting group at Manley Art Center in Brookings and decided to join forces when asked to have a show at the GoldRush Center.

At 6:30 Sharon Guinn will do a short demo on scratch art using Yupo paper ...it's fun and you can see some finished pieces done in this technique.  Horst Wolf will provide music and goodies will be served.

Kathy Huxley's favorite medium is oil and she has just completed a series of small paintings on wood panels using glazing techniques.  She loves plein air painting and shows her work in galleries in Brookings.  Her love of art began at an early age and she studied art at Ventura College and the University of California Santa Barbara. Kathy's style has changed from very impressionistic to realism and she is now moving her brush work back to a loose impressionistic style.  You can find Kathy's work at www.t-k-art.com.

Sharon Guinn loves to work in all mediums and will often mix mediums to get the effect she wants in a piece of art. She loves to work in graphite and do portraiture but has branched out to explore multiple mediums and subjects.  Sharon is known for her diverse subjects (people, flowers, graphics, cartoons, animals and still life).  Her whimsical paintings are very popular.  Sharon has shown art in Crescent City, Brookings, Gold Beach, Bandon, and Coos Bay galleries.  She has won awards for her art in the cities listed and you can see her art at www.sharonguinn.com. 

Don't forget Friday, May 7th , 6 to 8pm at GoldRush Center.  A “Creative Combo” will display a medley of  art styles.  Sharon Guinn and Kathy Huxley will meet you, greet you and pour you some wine.  They hope you come out just to have a good time.  A fusion of friends who love to do art with an eclectic blend for the creative heart.

Brookings Art Walk on WSO Weekend

The Watercolor Society of Oregon's Spring 2010 Aqueous Media Show opened at Manley Art Center and Gallery on Saturday at 4 pm.

 With creative use of temporary walls, the Manley Classroom was turned into an additional gallery.

  This show of 80 fine water media paintings will be available for viewing through April 30. Manley's hours are Tuesday - Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm.

The incredible finger food buffet was catered by Noel Hanna of C&K Markets - Ray's Food Place. Hanna also catered WSO's "Meet and Greet", the Sunday morning breakfast, and provided delicious box lunches for WSO members who were too busy with workshops and tours to stop for lunch on Saturday.

The show at Manley was judged by Stephen Quiller, noted water media artist, author, and workshop instructor, who also gave a lecture and demo to a packed house on Sunday morning and signed copies of his books for people attending the lecture.

Horst Wolf and Christina Olsen tended bar during the Artists' Reception at Manley Art Center.

  Garretta Lamore from Crescent City was among the crowd that attended the show's opening.

Chetco Community Library is featuring a show of work by Curry County Members of WSO. This show has been extended through May 20.

 

  Signatures Gallery is showing some beautiful new figure and portrait work by Jan Kunz.
 

  At Words and Pictures, George Cady has a show of outstanding photographs. You'll be awed by his huge photograph of a rainbow taken in Yosemite.

  Frank Gustafson demonstrated his oil painting techniques at Brian Scott Gallery.

Elio Camacho, the featured artist at Brian Scott Gallery this month, was unfortunately unable to attend, but several of his paintings can be seen at the gallery this month.

  This wall at Brian Scott Gallery is filled with works by students of Elio Camacho that reflect his love of using vibrating colors.

 
Back at Manley Art Center, Statue Man posed with or without someone to put his arm around... how long can he stand still in the cold anyway?

Maybe Christina can be talked into taking Statue Man a warming drink.
