Each year the Watercolor Society of Oregon holds a spring and fall convention with a juried show and always in a different location. Members submit nearly 400 paintings and 80 are chosen for inclusion in each show. Entries for the Spring Aqueous Media Show can be painted with any water-based media. The fall show accepts only transparent watercolor. There are approximately 800 members of WSO, and 18 of them live in Curry County.

Congratulations to local members Buzz Stewart and Janeen Vick of Brookings, and Pat Renner and Shelly Wierzba from Gold Beach who have had work juried into the show.
PBAA President, Lorelei Hanna, and Mr. Art Walk, Horst Wolf, co-chaired this event with the help of many of the local members of WSO and members of PBAA. The event has inspired an acceleration of the planned renovations and face lift for Manley Art Center. PBAA Vice President, George Cady, had the Manley Gallery repainted in February, with lots of help from members. In March, past PBAA President Bobbie Geney’s husband Dick designed and installed new landscaping for the entrance of Manley Art Center and again, many members labored to improve the rest of the landscaping. MAC is ready for this long awaited big event.
Local artists and WSO Members, Dale Wells of Brookings and Paul Renner of Gold Beach, will supervise the hanging of the show. Stephen Quiller will judge the show and 20 winners will be unveiled at the Artists Reception on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile on Saturday WSO members will take part in workshops all over Brookings, led by local artists Audi Stanton and Sara Broderick from Brookings, and Duana Roberts, Alexandra Eyer, and Pat Renner from Gold Beach. Member Linda Rothschild Ellis will hold a Photoshop Workshop for artists. Member’s guests are encouraged to see the sights, take a chartered bus tour of the coast, go on a guided coastal photo or redwoods hike, book a chartered fishing trip or helicopter ride, or play a round of golf.
Several events taking place during the convention will be open to non-members of WSO as space permits, and you may sign up at Manley Art Center. Events to sign up for include two critique sessions with Stephen Quiller on Saturday, a photoshop workshop Saturday morning, and a demo/lecture by Stephen Quiller on Sunday morning. To be admitted you need to sign up at Manley and pay the $10 per event fee by April 2.
The WSO Saturday Night Banquet at the Elks Club also has space for a few art lovers who are not WSO members. If you’d like to join in, stop by Manley Art Center before April 2 to make your menu choice and pay in advance for your meal.
