	Competition Information Now Available You are invited to enter the juried art show of the California State Fair! The 2010 California Fine Art competition information is now available online.  Follow the links or go to www.bigfun.org  click the “competitions” tab on the home page then scroll down to “Fine Art” and click on the words “Handbook” “Entry Form” or “Quick Reference Guide”.  The Competition Handbook contains all of the rules and requirements for the competition, a must-read item.  The Quick Reference Guide (also known as a Prospectus) gives you all of the divisions and dates at a glance.  Entry Forms, fees and CDs are due by April 23rd.  On-line entry will be available on March 1st but you can enter early by submitting the paper Entry Form.
	New California State Fair Dates The 2010 California State Fair will open on Wednesday, July 14,th – that’s a month earlier than previous years.  This means the California Fine Art exhibit will open July 14th and close on the last day of the fair, Sunday, August 1st.
	Who is on the Jury? We will announce the jury members as soon as all the contracts are finalized.  Look for an announcement of the 2010 Jury on our web site (under Fine Art on the Competitions Page, click on “2010 Jury”).  As in the past, we are seeking a mix of Museum Curators, College/University Art Professors, well-known artists, and Gallery Directors.  Each juror will judge one or more divisions, depending on the juror’s qualifications, experience and area of expertise.

	2010 California Fine Art Divisions & Classes DIVISION 400 - PAINTING Class 1: Oil paintings Class 2: Acrylic paintings Class 3: Watercolors Class 4: Plein Air (any media) a. Class 3 includes brushed ink artworks b. Entries in Class 4 should have been 90% completed en plein air. DIVISION 405 - OTHER 2-D ARTWORKS Class 1: Drawing Class 2: Pastels Class 3: Color Pencil Class 4: Printmaking Class 5: Collage Class 6: Mixed Media Class 7: Digital Art a. Entries in Class 4 must be prints made from artist’s hand-made or manipulated plate, stone or screen and be signed and numbered as a limited edition. b. Class 4: A Rube Goldberg sculpture is a deliberately over-engineered device that does a simple task in a complex way, usually involving a chain reaction - think a mouse trap destined for the Louvre. Entries in this class should be accompanied by video documentation in addition to digital still photographs (see item 2 under Requirements for Submission of Digital Files on Page 10 of Handbook). DIVISION 420- PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKS Class 1: Black & White Photographs Class 2: Color Photographs Class 3: Alternative Process/Mixed Media a. Digital photographs, unless excessively manipulated by software, may be submitted in Classes 1, 2, or 3. Manipulated or significantly modified digital photographs should be entered in Division 405, Class 7. b. Accepted entries in all classes will be displayed as prints and should comply with the display requirements for 2-dimensional works. c. Indicate on entry form the specific photographic process used for each entry: i.e. gelatin silver, color, ilfochrome, chromogenic, gum bichromate, hand-colored, etc.. d. Elio Camacho Oil Painting Demo at Crescent Harbor Gallery in Crescent City

 
There was standing room only for Elio Camacho's still life demonstration at Crescent Harbor Gallery on Thursday.  Nearly 50 people crowded in to watch Elio create a colorful, impressionistic painting.

Bricks for Valentine's Day

  Stout Park surrounds Manley Art Center on Oak Street. The Stout Park project will enhance the area between Manley Art Center and Chetco Avenue in Brookings.  Palm Stout, wife of Frank Stout who held controlling interest in the C & O Lumber Company, donated the property to the City of Brookings in 1966. She also left a trust to maintain the park. The trust does not cover the cost of further development. A gazebo and bench were added as an Eagle Scout project. More benches, paths, and a fountain are planned - waiting for funds to complete the project.

You can help to further develop this historic Brookings park and have your name or a loved one's name engraved on one of the park's bricks. What a nice Valentine gift for your sweetheart and for everyone in Brookings!

22 students attended Keith Sluder's ROCK 'N' SURF Workshop on January 11-12 at the Best Western Beachfront Inn.  Keith supplied the specialty paints and art boards which helped keep the students' costs down.  He gave each student his 40+ page Step-by Step Techniques SPECIAL FOLDER so students could improve their skills for years to come.  Keith's students were fascinated with his unique shortcut techniques to realism that even got the beginners up and running. 

Kids Art Classes at Manley Art Center begin February 4

 Janeen Vick will begin teaching kids' after school art classes at Manley Art Center on Thursday, Feb 4th and every Thursday after for a total of six weeks ending March 11th. The class will be from 3:15--5:30.  The cost is $5. per hour or $10 for each week.  The word from Janeen is: "We will be learning about the basics of watercolor and doing some really FUN projects this time." Open to all kids ages 7 to 14. Four Week Oil Painting Class at Manley Art Center In Brookings by Frank Gustafson

 

Frank "Gus" Gustafson will hold a four week oil painting class at Manley Art Center in Brookings, Oregon, beginning February 15. The class will meet each Monday for four consecutive weeks. Sign up at Manley Art Center - 541-469-1807. The tuition is $110 for PBAA members and $160 for non-members. If you fill out a one page questionaire by February 12 you will receive a $10 discount.

If you are not a PBAA member, you can save $25 by first joining the Pelican Bay Arts Association for $25 for a year - this math is pretty easy. Membership also gives you discounts on other workshops held during the year, the privilege of hanging art at Manley Art Gallery, and participating with free informal art and painting groups in the classroom.

Elio Camacho Oil Workshop in Crescent City, California on January 28-30

Here's a great opportunity. The Crescent Harbor Gallery in Crescent City, California, has arranged a free oil painting demo and a workshop at a reduced rate. The demo will take place at the Crescent Harbor Gallery at noon on Thursday the 28th of January, with a workshop following from 1:30 to 5:30. The cost of the half day workshop is $50. Full day workshops on Friday and Saturday are only $75 per day - an outstanding opportunity. You may participate on one, two, or all three days.

San Francisco Bay Area artist, Elio Camacho, paints in an impressionistic style and has studied with master impressionist Ovanes Berberien. Elio paints from life - usually outdoors, but when the weather makes painting plein air impossible, he creates some wonderful still life paintings.

 

California Guitar Trio at Cresscent Elk Auditorium on January 24

The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA), a nonprofit local arts agency, presents its third performance of the season -- California Guitar Trio (CGT)  --  in a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, January 24 in Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G Street in Crescent City. 

DNACA's 27th season is made possible by underwriters Caldwell & Sund Family Trust, Bill & Kathy Maffett, Physicians of Sutter Coast Hospital Fund, Gene & Carol Schach, Smith River Rancheria/Lucky 7 Casino, Sutter Coast Hospital, Wild Rivers Community Foundation and Bicoastal Media.

Not your usual guitar trio -- and not originally from California -- these three gentlemen play steel string guitars, and hail from Belgium (Bert Lams), Japan (Hideo Moriya) and Utah (Paul Richards).  Their instrumental whirlwind of musical genres ranges from jazz, originals and classical to cowboy classics and California-style surf rock. 

California Guitar Trio's virtuosity and sly sense of humor have earned them wide notoriety and a rabid following, with significant crossover in the progressive, acoustic and classical music scenes.

Richards, Lams and Moriya met in 1987 in England, at one of Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft courses.  After completing several of these intensive courses, the three traveled around the world for a few years, touring with Fripp's "League of Crafty Guitarists."  Wishing to continue working together after the League had run its course, they convened in Los Angeles and founded the California Guitar Trio in 1991.

Since then, CGT has released more than 14 CDs, some studio and some live, which include originals as well as a wide variety of classics, such as Bach's "Toccata and Fugue," a clever hybrid of "Riders in the Storm" and "Ghost Riders in the Sky,"  "Bohemian Rhapsody," and Pipeline."    Over the past 19 years of incessant touring, they have shared the stage with many superb musician and performers such as: John McLaughlin, Titi Puente, Taj Mahal, Peter Rowan and Tony Rice, Dark Star Orchestra, Adrian Legg and Kaki King. 

In 1995, the trio toured worldwide with King Crimson.  In 2004, collaborations with bassist Tony Levin (of King Crimson/Peter Gabriel) and drummer Paul Mastelotto widened the scope of the band's extensive repertoire and touring activity.

Notably, CGT music was featured on the television covergae of the 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004 Olympics, and on CBS, NBC, CNN and ESPN programs. The CGT performed on the 2003 Grammy-nominated track "Apollo" on Tony Levin's CD "Pieces of the Sun," and their music was sent into outer space as wake up music for the crew aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Endeavor.

"A California Guitar Trio performance is like a night at the theater: Drama, passion, humor, joy, pathos, it's all there," wrote Acoustic Musician Magazine.  "Energetic. Eclectic. Frenetic. Dynamic. Guitar music has never sounded quite like this before," noted the Desert News.

Michelle Curtis Demonstrated Clay Sculpture at Manley Art Center

  If you haven't seen Michelle's work in many places, it's because it sells about as fast as she can create it. On Thursday, January 14, Michelle demonstrated how she sculpts one of her masks on a leaf form. Each mask is uniquely sculpted by hand and and receives multiple glazes to achieve brilliance of color and depth.

Michelle says of her work:

"My pieces are all inspired by the natural wonder God created all around me in the beautiful little costal town of Brookings, Oregon where I live.  This town is known as the "Banana Belt" of the Oregon Coast, making it ideal for the leaves and flowers I use in my work.

I strive to make pieces of art which are high in quality, very unique and yet  affordable.  I have always been attracted to gallery quality art when enjoying the work of other artists, and have driven myself to only present pottery which is comparable in quality, yet still affordable for the average person."

Alexandra Eyer's Reception last Friday evening was a delight!  Alexandra works quickly from live models and these portraits using bold complementary colors don't just hang on the wall - they dance and sing and fill the room with their presence. A lot like Alexandra herself!

Crescent City Art Walk -- 10 Venues Friday, January 15

Crescent City is having an Art Walk!

Friday, January 15, 4 pm to 7 pm

Ten Crescent City galleries, studios, organizations and businesses will be part of an Art Walk, planned for the general time frame of 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15 in both the downtown Crescent City and the Crescent City Harbor areas.  The public is encouraged to turn out and walk from venue to venue (where possible) at their own leisure, enjoying the local/regional artwork on display.  In addition to DNACA's reception (from 5-6 p.m. only) at the Courthouse, sites participating in the art walk are The Daily Triplicate, The Gallery of Arts & Culture, Tomasini's Enoteca, Del Norte County Library, KHSU/KHSR Studio,  Mary Dorman-State Farm Insurance, Bay Studios, Crescent Harbor Gallery and Talking Crow Studio.  Refreshments will be available at most venues, live music at some.

January Brookings 2nd Saturday Art Walk From Driftwood to Silk

First Stop on the January Brookings Second Saturday Art Walk: SIGNATURES GALLERY where Thomas Sheets is showing his amazing assemblages of driftwood. You have to see these for yourself!

 Thomas discussed his nine months of work with an admiring crowd.

In addition to driftwood assemblages, this Art Walk offered pottery and a pottery making demonstration, watercolors, oils, silk art, pen and ink drawings, sculpture, and photography; plus wonderful music, limericks, a book signing, and tables laden with refreshments.

  Maryjane Carlson's "Mudslingers" demonstrated their craft at Manley Art Center.  In the foreground is a ceramic, woven basket being created by Joan Eddy while Maryjane works on a cache pot.

 Julie Campbell was creating a free form, multi-piece pot. Visitors asked lots of questions and took photos.

 Karina and Marco entertained at Manley. Frank "Gus" Gustafson posed with one of his oil seascapes. Gus is taking sign ups for a four-week oil painting class at Manley in February (Mondays only). Contact Gus at 541-469-7737 for information and to sign up. On Thursday, February 11, at 12:30 pm Gus will do an oil painting demonstration at the monthly meeting of PBAA at Manley Art Center. The public is invited to attend this free demonstration.

 At Words and Pictures Gallery the floral work of Brookings Artist Sara Broderick and Gold Beach Artist Magda Druzdzel were hung, and will be shown all month.

 Steven Leek was signing his new book, "Elmer's War,"  which is now available at Words and Pictures. Nina Paulsen was at the keyboard.

 
Limericist Queen Lynn Guild was out of town - but the show went on at Dewey's Digs with Marge Woodfin reigning. Pilot writer Bill Schlichting and Signatures Gallery owner Sandy Bonny (left) joined Elmo and the regulars including Carl, Kat, Marge, and Christina.

 Wright's Down Under was bustling with activity. Dave Scott's photography filled one wall. Joey Nobell's horses in oil took the opposite wall, and Jon Parmentier played guitar.

  Janis Parker (center) was showing her award winning watercolors at the alley entrance to Wright's Down Under. Janis' sister and Pilot writer and photographer Bill Schlichting stopped by to chat.
 

 Watercolors by Rick Bennet from Gasquet can be seen at Wrights Custom Framing for the month of January.

  In addition to Rick's watercolors, the music of Giraffes on a Raft and piles of Susie Wrights fabulous cookies kept everyone happy at Wrights Custom Framing.

 At The Brian Scott Gallery, Brookings Artist Dale Wells chatted with PBAA President Lorelei Hanna.

 With the work of Horst Wolf as a backdrop, Taste O' Honey entertained at The Brian Scott Gallery.

Upstairs from Brian Scott Gallery, at the Snug, Aura Wright warmed the night.

 The Snug featured a silk painting demonstration by local  artist Billie Ruth Furuichi.

 
At the Chetco Library Milann Reynolds provided a musical tribute to Barbara Kennedy, a talented Brookings artist who passed away recently. A retrospective of her work will be on display at the Library throughout January. Another collection of her work can be seen at Tangles Salon which Barbara co-owned with her husband.

 Pete Chasar gave a warm and uplifting talk about the life and work of Barbara Kennedy. Friends shared their thoughts and memories of Barbara.

 Centre Stage presented the sculpture of James Anderson. The artist sketched while Rebecca Brickley and Mariah Leanne entertained with jazzy blues.

 Phil Hilger "practiced" some new music at A Wild Bird and Backyard General Store, where he was also showing his gorgeous coastal photography. We couldn't decide which is better, his music or his photographs - both are outstanding.

It was another great art walk Horst - even though you had to be out of town for a Watercolor Society of Oregon meeting. How do they do it month after month?  They wouldn't miss it for anything! Well, almost anything. The artists, the musicians, the venue owners, and the community come together to enjoy art, music, food, and each other's company.

Head's up everybody -- on April 9, 10, 11, the Watercolor Society of Oregon will hold it's annual Spring Convention and Show in Brookings!The Art Walk on April 10 will be part of the festivities. The Juried Show of WSO will be held at Manley Art Center. Put it on your calendar now because you will not want to miss this one!

The Assemblage Art of Thomas Sheets

Unique and original, Thomas Sheets' contemporary environmental assemblage wall art is composed of found driftwood objects. His show at Signatures Gallery is the first for this area.

Thomas had searched for years for the perfect medium to express and reflect his many moods. He experimented with oils, watercolors, ceramics, photography, as well as music. Then by accident, while beachcombing on the Oregon coast, he stumbled upon pieces of driftwood and naturally polished stones intertwined in the ever changing patterns of the water washed sand. "Epiphany!"

 

Each individual piece, like no other, tells its own story. Some are soft and smooth in serene harmony, others are jagged and rough in violent conflict. Each adds its own personality or accent, its own highlight to each assemblage. Thomas has immortalized these "sticks and stones" in his artwork. They live on instead of being lost forever.

Putting together this work is not easy. There are days, weeks, months of traveling the coastline regardless of the weather. Thomas, with his dog Tripper, hikes down to hidden beaches, gathering only the pieces that "speak" to him. Fighting the crashing surf for the perfect piece, then struggling to carry his load of "sticks and stones" up the rocky bluffs. Then comes the sorting, selecting, polishing, arranging and rearranging until the final vision is realized.

 

Keeping as close as possible to the original condition of the wood, the small pieces are combined with sea glass, wave washed stones, iron pyrite and other minerals. Some have copper wire and braided steel wire interwoven into the composed patterns and bas-relief compositions. Many are designed to be hung either horizontally or vertically, depending upon your wall space.

Book-signing trip results in sales of two paintings for Pete Chasar

Pete Chasar, while on a recent book-signing trip to Arizona, sold two of his paintings, one an existing painting of St. George Lighthouse and the other, a new commission.

Chasar was in Arizona in November, essentially to attend two book-signing events in Scottsdale. But, in the process of signing copies of his new book, Desert Spring -- many for old friends and acquaintances -- he was pleasantly surprised by the sale of two of his paintings.

"Though I took my painting portfolio along on the book-signing trip, I never expected to make any direct art sales. So selling one painting, then another, was a really nice surprise," comments Chasar.

The existing painting that Chasar sold is a 24 X 36-inch piece called Golden Hour Off St. George. The new painting that he was commissioned to create is a scene of an Arizona friend walking on the beach near Cape Sebastian on a wet, overcast day. That painting is titled, Walking on Water.

Chasar adds, "Unlike most of my paintings, this one is done on a wood panel, rather than canvas. I ended up using quarter-inch birch plywood for a painting surface because I couldn't find a pre-stretched canvas in the 18 X 45-inch format. And I felt the plywood would make a flatter, firmer surface than canvas that I stretched myself."

Chasar's book, Desert Spring, which is sub-titled Learning to Love and Preserve Wild Arizona, recounts his adventures exploring and then helping to preserve the desert mountains in and around Scottsdale.

Both his book and his paintings are on display at Words & Pictures in Brookings, and Gold Beach Books and the Gold Rush Gallery in Gold Beach.
