Signatures Gallery reopened in a new location on Chetco Avenue - just barely in time for the Art Walk. At 4:02 pm guess what Joe Tonini was still doing... Excellent job. The Gallery is definitely one of the very best on the coast and is featuring two new artists this month.
Spencer Reynolds' painting of Natural Bridges is the first piece you see when entering Signatures Gallery.
Spencer paints on old doors and recycled wood, incorporating the distressed areas and wood grain into his design. He enjoys the play between the raw and the refined. "The colorful, clean line work in these paintings brings a refined quality to the rough surfaces."
Also new at Signatures, Keith Sluder explained how he creates his masterpieces by meticulous crosshatching, using nearly every type of water based paint there is, and "freezing" it with a heat gun.
The new Signatures features wide isles that accommodate crowds and easy viewing, and full spectrum lighting that shows off all the hues of the artwork.
Back at Signatures' previous location, The Eclectic Gallery and Happy Days Ice Cream Parlor and Memorabilia shop was open and showing movie memorabilia, hoola hoops, and many other "fun" items in addition to art. Giraffes on a Raft entertained.
Horst Wolf on keyboard at the Brian Scott Gallery. Horst never missed a note while discussing art with a prospective buyer. The gallery is featuring the work of Trude Zmoelnig, Dale Wells, Horst Wolf, Christina Olsen, Richard Hinger, and Billie Ruth Furuichi.
SOCC and College of the Redwoods Art Instructor, Sara Broderick, showed the work of fifty of her students at Wrights. The work was done for design, drawing, and painting classes.
Lon Goddard and Aura Wright kept the mood lively at Wrights.
Karina and Marco entertained at Eye for Art where the work of Dale Hendrix, Lorraine Filippone, and Barbara Kennedy is featured.
In addition to showing his art at Words and Pictures, Pete Chasar told the story of "Spring and Spirit Helper" from his new book called "Desert Spring". The book is available at Words and Pictures in Brookings and at the Biscuit Gallery in Gold Beach. Pete will be doing a book signing at the Biscuit Gallery on July 19 at 3 pm.
Audi Stanton is showing her watercolors and mixed media at Words and Pictures during June. She explained the upcoming Art Studio Tour to a guest at the gallery who had purchased a ticket for the Tour.
The two-day Art Studio Tour will be held on July 18 and 19, 2009, from 11 am to 4 pm each day. A $10 tour ticket also includes an invitation to the Friday night reception on July 17 at Manley Art Center. Tickets are available at Words and Pictures, Manley Art Center, and Morys.
The newspaper stand in front of Dewey's Digs announced Jo Mochulski's show inside.
Jo Mochulski showed a variety of her photographs in a show at Deweys titled "Perfect Moments... People, Places, and Things" - and also showed how she uses her photos as an inspiration for her paintings. Carl Rovainen and Friends entertained.
The Firefly Studio Art Gallery (where Destiny Schwartz shows her whimsical work) was buzzing.
The Outdoor Alley Gallery for Living Arts (next to Firefly), featured Flora Pacifica's plants, baskets, wreaths, and arrangements unique to our community.
Manley Art Center was buzzing too... that's Rapp Brush in the back on guitar. All of the 3rd Place and Honorable Mention winners at the Azalea Festival Art Show are on display at Manley this month.
In the backyard at Manley Art Center, Craig Barnes demonstrated one of his sculpting techniques on a beautiful piece of wood. You can see his work at Manley Art Center and at the Brian Scott Gallery on Chetco Avenue.
Also at Manley, "Make-T-shirts for Father's Day" was going on, with a wide variety of original artwork.
This young artist was so happy with her T-shirt that she took it to the Rally in the Alley and entered it in the Art-on-a-Stick contest.
Not only did Brooke go home with a unique Father's Day gift, she won a prize (a wreath from Flora Pacifica) presented by Lynn Guild, got a trumpet blast from Horst Wolf, and had her picture taken by Pilot photographer, Bill Schlichting. What a day to remember!
And here's a place you probably missed... It's a new Art Walk venue and didn't make it on the June Art Walk Flyer...
Village Express Mail Center at 855C Railroad Street (just west of Fred Meyers).
Village Express features the photography of Mike Roberts and Kara Roberts.
During June Village Express is also featuring watercolors from the Honoring Wisdom and Sporting Dogs series by Nola Range.
One of Nola's "Honoring Wisdom" portraits (Annabel playing the Piano) was used on the current cover of a national magazine that featured an article about PBAA's Honoring Wisdom project last fall.
At the Library this month you can see all the 1st and 2nd Place Winners in the Azalea Festival Art Show. When I got there they were turning out the lights so I had to snap fast--this art will be on display all of June, so stop by the Library for a closer look.
For all of the venues I didn't get to, I apologize. There were 16 venues participating in the Art Walk this month, and three more supporting it. I walked as fast as my shoes would go, but when the Library started turning off the lights and I still had miles to go, I knew I was in trouble. We salute Beckley and Company, showing the photography of Any Myrah; Centre Stage and Earle E Books featuring Christina Olsen; Mory's showing the work of many local artists; and A Wild Bird and Backyard General Store where Diana Pierce showed and discussed her watercolors. Also open to support the Art Walk; The Grill on the Alley, Bella Italia Restaurant, Salty Dog Coffee Bar, and Feather your Nest.
