Award-winning sculptor, DJ Garrity will lead a fascinating exploration of the art of stone sculpture at the Manley Art Center in Brookings on June 13-16, 2008. The artist who served three tours of duty as Sculptor-In-Residence of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, has established an international reputation with artists, educators and gardeners who have enjoyed his innovative workshop and the opportunity to create a unique stone sculpture. “The workshop has been especially popular with students interested in the college credits and artists who want to add three-dimensional sculpture to their body of work” according to Garrity. “The gardening community has also been a strong presence in most of my workshops around the country. The classical association between the art of gardening and the art of sculpture has inspired those students to create unique additions to their landscape”.
No experience is required to participate in “The Rhythms of Stone Workshop” and students of all ages have joined in the light approach, which the artist brings to the art of stone sculpture. The workshop is fully accredited for undergraduate, graduate, and professional development credits. Garrity will be leading workshops in 2008 at the Filoli Center of Woodside California, The Oregon Botanical Garden, The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach and at Blithwold Mansion and Gardens of Newport, Rhode Island. Class size will be limited to 12 and students can register for "The Rhythms of Stone Workshop" at the Manley Art Center by contacting the Pelican Bay Arts Association at 541-469-1807.
