Buzz Stewart shared glimpses of his 55 years as a Brookings artist with fellow artists at Manley Arts Center today -- including his original drawings and hand lettering for a lumber company brochure, a poster he created for the Aleutian Goose Festival, samples of his framed watercolors and acrylics, and best of all, several of his sketchbooks. Many artists are unwilling for whatever reason, to share their sketchbooks. Buzz enjoys hiking and bird watching and takes along his sketchbook and pen. He also carries a small paint box with a collapsible brush and a small bottle of water to record landscapes, wildlife, and seascapes.
It was a special treat to watch Buzz complete a seascape in watercolor in about 40 minutes - all the while answering questions from the audience, and even altering his painting to demonstrate a technique that was being discussed. He worked with 300 lb Fabriano paper, several large flat brushes, and a napkin for picking up paint.
Buzz Stewart is also a regular at the Thursday evening "Life Drawing" sessions at Manley Art Center. You can see more of his paintings at Words and Pictures Gallery in Brookings.
